Here are two substitutions you can try -- you're bound to have some of these ingredients in your kitchen. I always keep this info handy, as a whole carton of buttermilk goes bad before I can use it all.

Combine one cup of milk (or soy milk) plus one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, and allow to stand for ten minutes

OR Combine one cup of milk plus two teaspoons cream of tartar, and allow to stand for ten minutesWhat is a good substitution for buttermilk in a banana bread recipe?
Well, you probably don't need the answer this late, but plain yogurt is a good substitute for buttermilk.
milk will work or if you have it 1/2 evaporated milk and 1/2 water works well
you can make a substitute for the buttermilk

Put 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar in a 1cup container and fill the rest up with milk- any kind whole, 2%, 1%, or nonfat. Stir and use in the recipe in place of the buttermilk.
I have used the vinegar version...works fine!

Buttermilk: 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar plus enough milk to make 1 cup equals 1 cup of buttermilk.

use condensed milk fat free or use skim milk or low fat heavy cream
A substitute for bettermilk can be made by adding either 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar plus enough milk to make one cup. Let it stand for 5 minutes before using.

Or you can substitute 1 cup plain yogurt for the buttermilk.
You could use sour cream and thin it down with a little whole milk .
i didnt know that you could use buttermilk, why not go exotic and use some molasses its very sweet and taste great with baked goods
